4.Given the contradictory lessons of World Wars 1 and World Wars 2, can you thick of situations in today’s world where appeasement (a conciliatory policy) would be the best course? Situations where hard-line containment policies would be best? Why?

Today’s world is in transition. The two poles system was vanished when Soviet Union and her bloc were collapsed, however, a whole new world is not built up yet. Although, some IR scholars deem present world is a monopole system of America’s hegemony-the only super power in the world but my opinion is not. Of course, United States struggle to establish a monopole system and she has a good result in the 90’s . After the 911 terror attack, She spread military operations in the world, especially forged evidence to rationally invaded Iraq. The monopole system dream of United States set back. On the other way, the uprising of China, revolting unilateralism in United States , European Union and the anew perk - Russia. I regard the further world will end up in multi-polar system.

Each polar of the multi-polar system-United State, European Union, Russia and China have nuclear weapons. On the other hand, the worlds stabilization and development must be in cooperation and collaboration of these power countries. Moreover, the world trend is globalization, which all countries are more interdependent than before. The conciliatory policy is favorable in maintaining stablility, and any single direction will be defeated like the unilateralism of United States.

The conciliatory policy and globalization is the trend now, so hard-line containment policies are impossible except countries closed themselves to international intercourse like North-Korea. During the cold war, even China was not defeated by the containment policy, therefore, at this globalization moment, the containment policy is not considered effective as well.
