Talking about and Individual

writing by 無雙直傳

What can we do to face the globalization challenge? Thomas L. Friedman gives some opinions to us; “To be an Untouchable” where no one can retain ones job or position in the global village. He told us to find specialized, localized, collaborated, knowledgeable, innovated and personalized jobs (new middle jobs) because traditional white-collar service jobs are becoming fungible. We must find a job that would never be outsourced, automated, or made tradable by electronic transfer.

He gives some examples: managers, writers, teachers, journalists, editors, synthesizers like search engine optimizing designers, renewable energies and environmentally sustainable systems jobs etc. I can give more examples like famous fashion designers, artists, singers, musicians, barbers, social workers, athletes, specialized consultants; how about become a Fung Shui consultant? All above jobs have two main characteristics; 1. knowledge and innovation for white-collar, 2. specialized skills and faces to client for blue-collar. It means that you must possess both high education and creative thinking at first or you provide special and higher value service in second. How to be the best of the best in your business, it is the answer. Howeve, does it resolve the problem? It is for individual and not for society.

Why the traditional white-collar jobs become fungible? This is because competition is harder than before. In the third wave theory, the competition in third wave society is harder than second wave society. For example, in first wave society, an artist or a singer only serves several villages or cities because he or she must face to the audiences. In second wave society, He or she may serve several countries because sound recording technique or movie was invented. In third wave society, especially in globalization he or she can serve global through internet and satellite TV. The globe does not need so many artists or singers because one can serve more audiences than before. In the past, we only watched local artists in TV. Nowadays, you can watch South Korea’s, Taiwan’s, Mainland’s, Japan’s, Singapore’s or Malaysia’s artists in your TV everyday. If you are an artist, then you must be very special in personality and characteristics in order to be outstanding.

For individual, it is a driving force to upgrade ourselves and work hard, but for society this means that it will be more ruthless. Anyone wants to be best of the best one and ironically best of the best one is unique. What about the others person whom live under the globalization, especially those not well-educated peoples who are suffering in fragile position. This question I want to explore in the next article, which talking about society. Presently, I want to talk about well- educated people on how to face the globalization.

Individually, how can we face the globalization? First of all, we must be fluent in English if it is not your mother language. Some people regard knowledge important than English skill, of course, I regarded too when I was a youth, however, that was an excuse for me to avoid using English. Today so much new knowledge is written in English and we use English to discuss with others in the world; that looks like knowing Latin for western world or Chinese for Far East in the past. If we are not good in English, we cannot survive in the flat world.

Secondly, we must change our mind that high education is stairs for you upgrade our social class. This thinking is outdated now because 1.so many competition within, 2. the economic circumstances alter promptly and frequently, so professional jobs today may be outsourced or no demand. Better education is for our survival in the flat world.

Thirdly, besides we take professional course, we need general knowledge too. It is good for us either be a professional or generalist. It is important that characteristic is a tool for us to face the irregularly changed flat world and it is good for us to cultivate creative thinking and synthesized capability.

Fourthly, Friedman talked about CQ+PQ>IQ; curiosity quotient adds passion quotient more than intelligence quotient. I think this theory is good for high qualification jobs or researchs. In addition, Friedman left behind one thing; the EQ (emotion quotient) is important too, especially, some service jobs require good interpersonal relationship. Therefore, I amend the theory of Friedman’s formula to CQ+PQ+EQ>IQ. I regard the importance of each is CQ>PQ>EQ>IQ. The important of CQ, which Erich Fromm explained clearly.

In Summariy, facing the globalization is a hard mission for us including intellectual or middle class. It is the time for the intellectual and middle class to prepare crisis management, which brought by the globalization. It is difficult for them to survive in globalization but easier than the lower-class to face it. In the next article, I shall talk about our society on “how to help them to face globalization challenge”.
