Why Chinese eat dogs? Are they cruel, brutal and merciless? Of course not, the answer may be surprising to you because it comes from biogeography. In biogeography, species do not distribute equally and not all animals can be domesticated. Around 10,000 B.C., ancient Chinese domesticated dogs and about 8,000 B.C. domesticated Pigs. So, the dogs and pigs were the main sources of protein for ancient Chinese. Not only China, Polynesia and Aztec Mexico also bred dogs for food. However, regular dog eating has been a last resort of meat-deprived human societies: the Aztecs had no other domestic mammal, and the Polynesians and ancient Chinese had only pigs and dogs. [1]When Chinese ate dogs to obtain protein longer and longer, the societal behavior transferred to cultural behavior. Hence, I deduce why Chinese like to eat games (野味 ) because it was lack of protein supply in the past, so ancient Chinese needed to hunt games for food. Similar to eating dogs, eating games became cultural behavior until modern China.
